State officials say a sweep of coastal waters in Plaquemines and St. Bernard
parishes found more than 1,900 abandoned and derelict crab traps. The
Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says the traps were picked up
and taken to a salvage yard for recycling.

More than 20,000 traps have been picked up since state officials and
volunteers began a program to clean up derelict traps in 2004.

Marine animals get caught in them and they can also be a boating hazard.

The 10-day sweep ended on March 5 in Plaquemines and St. Bernard parishes.

One in Terrebonne Parish will run from Saturday through March 26.

A volunteer clean-up day on Saturday will start at Louisiana Universities
Marine Consortium in Cocodrie.
