April 10 (Bloomberg) -- Valero Energy Corp. is shutting production units at the Meraux refinery in Louisiana after a power failure, a company spokesman said.
Workers are attempting to restore power that was lost at about 9:30 a.m. local time, Bill Day, a San Antonio-based spokesman for Valero, said in an e-mail. The refinery is flaring as the units are shut down, he said.
The entire refinery lost power from unknown causes that led to flaring of multiple products, said Jean Kelly, a spokeswoman for the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.
The 135,000-barrel-a-day refinery has a 34,000-barrel-a-day hydrocracker and a 41,000-barrel-a-day hydrotreater, according to the company’s website. The plant processes 50 percent to 80 percent medium sour crude, according to the site.
