CHALMETTE, La. -- Officials in St. Bernard Parish are calling on residents
and businesses to make sure properties are in code compliance.

Monday and Tuesday, a crew of inspectors will fan out across Arabi and
Chalmette looking for violations.
The effort is part of a series of compliance sweeps that will run throughout
the year, as officials say they're working to improve quality of life in the
parish.

"The thing that you see primarily this time of year, naturally, is grass
violations -- the grass over 18 inches high," said St. Bernard Parish
President David Peralta. "The other thing that we look for are illegal signs
-- signs that are placed where they're not supposed to be, near the state
highways or state right of ways, the dumpsters that are supposed to be in
the back of the residences as opposed to the front."

Before they issue citations, officials say, violators will be given an
opportunity to bring their properties into compliance.
