Volunteers are sought to help prepare Chalmette National Cemetery for the
Memorial Day holiday weekend. The cemetery adjacent Chalmette Battlefield
will host a program honoring fallen soldiers Sunday.

The Vietnam veterans of VFW Post 3798, the National Park Service and the
National World War Museum will honor America's fallen troops during a
program at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the cemetery, 8606 W. St. Bernard Highway in
Chalmette.

The event is open to the public.

Volunteers are needed to help put out American flags at the cemetery on
Friday, and to help pick them up on Tuesday, May 29.

The flags are put on each headstone in the cemetery. The work begins at 7:30
a.m. Friday and typically takes three to four hours. Volunteers are needed
to help pick up the flags on Tuesday, May 29.

Volunteers can call 504.512.2445 for more information, the National Park
Service and St. Bernard Parish government said in a news release.

The cemetery and battlefield, site of the Battle of New Orleans in 1815, are
managed by the National Park Service. More than 15,000 troops ranging from
the War of 1812 to the Vietnam War are buried in the cemetery.

The cemetery, battlefield, and visitor center are open daily from 9 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. Visit the National Park Service's website, www.nps.gov/jela, for
more information.
