N.O. man accused of raping Chalmette preteen

NEW ORLEANS - A 20-year-old New Orleans man is facing charges that he raped
a pre-teen Chalmette girl, according to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's
Office.
St. Bernard Parish deputies booked Andrew Smith, 20, with aggravated rape.
Sheriff James Pohlmann said Smith and his older brother were staying at the
victim's mother's home when he went into the preteen's room and locked her
door. The mother had left Smith and the brother alone with her.
When the preteen asked why he did that, Smith told her "not to worry about
it," Pohlmann said, and walked to her bed, placed one hand over her mouth
and forced her to have sex.
Pohlmann said that when deputies came to Smith's home to question him about
the incident, he said, "I know why you're here -- because I had sex with a
younger female."
Smith is being held in St. Bernard Parish Prison on a $500,000 bond.
An aggravated rape charge carries a sentence of up to life in prison.
