Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis to visit Elaine P. Nunez Community College
Nunez awarded $2.76 million for business and hospitality workforce grant

 

The Elaine P. Nunez Community College will host Secretary of Labor Hilda L.
Solis on Wednesday, October 17, 2012.  The visit will include a tour of the
college and discussions about the importance of innovation and collaboration
for community college training programs. 

 

Nunez was recently awarded a $2,760,356 grant through the U.S. Department of
Labor's Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College to Career Training
initiative. The funding will be used to implement a redesigned Associates of
Applied Science for Business Administration and two, new Associates of
Applied Science with an emphasis on entrepreneurship/small business
management, and Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism administration.

 

Elaine P. Nunez Community College is the only, single institution in
Louisiana to receive the grant, which a Department of Labor release says was
awarded to a total of 54 grants covering nearly 300 schools across the
country. The grants are designed to foster partnerships between community
colleges and local employers to promote skills development and employment
opportunities in a variety of fields including advanced manufacturing,
transportation and health care, as well as science, technology, engineering
and math occupations, says the release. 

 

Secretary Solis will tour the College and participate in discussions with
Nunez Chancellor Dr. Thomas R. Warner; Business students; and, community,
business partners. The tour will commence at 1:10 p.m., with remarks and
press availability at 1:40 p.m., Wednesday, October 17, 2012.
