A New Orleans teen-ager escaped the St. Bernard Juvenile Detention Center in
Chalmette on Sunday but was caught about an hour later on a nearby street,
the St. Bernard Sheriff's Office announced Monday. The 16-year-old, whose
name was not released because he is a minor, escaped by climbing several
fences during a daily exercise allotment just before 6 p.m. Sunday,
according to the Sheriff's Office.

St. Bernard Parish Sheriff Jimmy Pohlmann said that due to several
lacerations from scaling those fences, the teen was taken to University
Hospital for medical treatment but returned to the Juvenile Detention Center
on Paris Road later that evening. The teen, who was found on the 300 block
of West Grand Hommes Street., received some stitches for his lacerations,
according to the Sheriff's Office.

The teen-ager is in the detention center awaiting a Chalmette carjacking
charge from about a year ago, according to the Sheriff's Office.

A second detainee, a 14-year-old boy from the Opelousas area, tried to
escape with the other teen-ager but didn't make it out before he was
stopped, according to the Sheriff's Office statement.
