On the Saturday before Christmas, a Chalmette man discovered a cash register
lying under a camouflage jacket across the street from his home. Michael
Schenck told a St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's deputy that he was leaving his
house to run some errands when he observed the jacket, according to the
police report.

When he returned, Schenck said the jacket still was lying there, in the
empty lot across from his home on the 200 block of East Solidelle Street.
So, Schenck walked over and, as he approached, he saw something hanging out
from beneath its cover.

Schenck said the register already was missing its cash drawer, according to
the police report. Sheriff's spokesperson Steve Cannizaro said no St.
Bernard businesses have reported any missing registers, so sheriff's
officials are checking with law enforcement agencies across the metro New
Orleans area.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the St. Bernard
Sheriff's Office at 504.271.2501.
