St. Bernard Parish receives $5, 934,955.00 in new State Hazard Mitigation
Funds 

 

St. Bernard Parish Government received an additional HMGP grant award
totaling $5,934,955.00 for the design and implementation of a SCADA
(Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system and to design and install
two emergency power generators at critical facilities in Arabi and
Chalmette. The SCADA system will cost $5,432,766.00 and the two power
generators will cost a total of $480,000.00.

 

The addition of a SCADA system will allow for remote monitoring and
operation of the parish's 128 sites that control the flow of rainwater and
sewerage across the parish. One power generator will be placed at the Public
Works Office - Main Yard, off Parish Road, and the other will be located at
the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office Aycock Street Substation. Both
generators will be elevated above ground to ensure facility operations in
the event of flooding.

 

Parish leaders believe the funded HMGP projects will make important
contributions to community emergency operations during a major storm event.
"Bringing on-line a SCADA system will allow us to efficiently operate lift
stations without having personnel present on site, especially during heavy
rain,"  and  "By having an emergency power source, the Public Works Main
Yard can be utilized as a satellite response center, allowing parish
government to better position essential personnel," said Parish President
Dave Peralta."

 

St. Bernard Parish Sheriff Jimmy Pohlmann also welcomed the news about the
HMGP grant award.  "The Aycock Street Substation in Arabi houses key law
enforcement staff.  Having a power generator will allow us to continue
operations at the substation even if severe weather were to knock out
electricity.  It will greatly enhance our capacity to serve the public
during an emergency" said Sheriff Pohlmann.
