St. Bernard Parish Comprehensive Plan Community Workshop

Saturday, March 9, 2013 from 9:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Chalmette 9th Grade Academy cafeteria - 1101 East Judge Perez Drive

St. Bernard Parish Government is conducting a community workshop on
Saturday, March 9, 2013 from 9:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. to gain public input
on the direction for the parish's Comprehensive Plan. The workshop will be
held in the Chalmette 9th Grade Academy cafeteria located at 1101 East Judge
Perez Drive.

Over the past few months, St. Bernard Parish and its consultant team have
been gathering community values and visions from parish residents. To build
on this effort, Parish staff and the consultant team will facilitate a
community workshop where participants will interactively plan for future
land uses and conceptually outline how the parish should develop over time.
The workshop is planned to be informative and provide an opportunity for
citizens to be heard.

At this workshop, participants will discuss the current parish trajectory
and then discuss alternative future scenarios toward which the parish could
aspire. Participants will discuss who is living in the parish, what retail
and commercial businesses can be expected, what basic fundamentals are
needed, and what amenities the community would like to see in the parish
based upon each of the scenarios. The benefits and costs of each possible
future and how each scenario relates to overall parish economic development
will also be an important part of the conversation. Informed by this
discussion, participants will determine which alternative future scenario
best represents the parish and its community. This future scenario will
become the basis for the comprehensive plan.

The workshop will include a background on the comprehensive plan process, a
summary of the community meeting held in December, and results of the
on-line survey. The consultant team will then discuss the alternative future
scenarios. Participants will then have group discussions on a variety of
topics (including schools, safety, housing, and retail) influenced by the
scenarios. A real-time key pad polling technique will also be used to
extract values and vision ideas from the public during each public meeting.

A Comprehensive Plan is a community's general guide on how to best
accommodate residents and businesses and provides an approach on how to
address community issues. The Comprehensive Plan contains and land use map,
a vision statement, goals, policies, and implementation strategies. Decision
makers, such as the Parish Council, Planning Commission, and staff use the
plan's goals, policies and implementation strategies during project review
of land use and development proposals.

Make sure that your voice and values are represented in this Comprehensive
Plan update by getting involved today!
