St. Bernard Parish receives State Hazard Mitigation Funds (HMGP) for Phase 1
Lake Borgne Pump Upgrades

St. Bernard Parish Government received a Hazard Mitigation Grant Program
allocation of $5,859,945.00 for the design and replacement of existing pump
engines at Stations 1and 4. Phase one approval of $580,000.00 will allow the
Parish to start the design and preliminary work before actual construction
begins.

The Lake Borgne Basin Levee District, through the Southeast Louisiana Flood
Protection Authority -East, is responsible for the operation and maintenance
of the pump stations across the parish. This project is a top priority for
the success of their operations as well as protection for the Parish. The
upgraded equipment will have approximately 15% more horsepower over the
existing engines, which will maximize the efficiency of the existing pumps
while dramatically lowering operations and maintenance costs. This will
decrease the overall time that it takes to pump water out of the areas
serviced by these pump stations and is another improvement to further reduce
the risk of flooding due to rainfall in St. Bernard Parish. The new engines
will also allow for the future implementation of a remote operation system
by personnel from "safe rooms".

"Replacing the decades-old existing pump engines with new machinery will
ensure that our pumps are working properly during a major rain event,
further protecting commercial and residential structures from inundation
during a major rainfall event" said Parish President David Peralta. "This
joint-endeavor between the parish and the Lake Borgne Basin Levee District
will greatly benefit our community."

Lake Borgne Basin Levee District Executive Director Nicholas Cali expressed
appreciation for the Parish's decision to include the pump replacements in
its grant application. "These upgrades are a huge step toward modernizing
the pump stations, and this project would not be possible without the help
from St. Bernard Parish," said Cali.
