St. Bernard Parish receives Approval of $12,918,703 in

Hazard Mitigation Grant Funds (HMGP) for Two Drainage Projects.

St. Bernard Parish Government received two additional HMGP grant approvals
totaling $12,918,703 for the design and implementation of two Drainage
Improvement Projects in St. Bernard Parish. The first project will be the
Palmisano Boulevard Area Drainage Improvement Project with a total cost of
$8,361,556. The second project will be the Congressmen
Hebert-Creely-Bluebird Canal Drainage Area Project with a total cost of
$4,557,147.

The Palmisano Drainage Project consist of a drainage area of over 100 acres
beginning in the area of Lyndell Court and Plaza Drive to East St. Bernard
Highway, then to Palmisano Boulevard, north along side of Palmisano
Boulevard, then ending at the Twenty Arpent Canal. Design and Improvements
will include upgrading pump discharge capacities, installing new box
culverts to increase drainage capacities and flows, removal of undersized
culverts and unpermitted obstructions on public lands, and the construction
of a new span bridge at Palmisano Boulevard and the Twenty Arpent Canal.

The Congressmen Hebert-Creely-Bluebird Canal Project consists of a drainage
area of over 500 acres. Congressman Hebert Canal runs south to north along
Congressman Hebert Drive, starting near West St. Bernard Highway and running
approximately 2,500 feet to the Blue Bird Canal. The Creely Canal runs south
to north along Creely Drive, starting near West St. Bernard Highway and
running approximately 2,500 feet to the Blue Bird Canal. The Blue Bird Canal
runs east to west starting at the Guichard Canal to Old Hickory Street.
Design and Improvements will include widening and stabilizing of existing
canal banks, increasing size and capacities of existing culverts, and
removing unpermitted obstructions on public lands.

Parish leaders believe the funded HMGP projects will make important and
needed improvements to drainage and pumping capacities in these areas. "We
are consistently responding to flooding events in these areas due to poor
drainage capacities, obstructions, and undersized culverts", said Parish
President Dave Peralta." "Both of these important drainage projects will
help our Parish reduce future flood losses and inconveniences to property
owner from flooding events." "I am pleased that the residents and businesses
in the Palmisano area will finally get the much needed drainage improvements
that has been lacking for many years" said Councilman Richie Lewis.
