A bomb scare led to the closure of three blocks of St. Bernard Highway in
St. Bernard Parish after a man left a suspicious backpack behind the counter
of an Arabi donut and burger shop. The man dropped the bag at Gerald's
Donuts around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday after a brief argument with a waitress,
according to parish Councilman Richie Lewis, who owns the shop.

"At the end of the day, it was nothing, thank God," Lewis said. "Five months
ago, you could have done that and you would have thought nothing about it."

Both Lewis and sheriff's officials noted that the Boston Marathon bombing
had made them more on guard - and area residents perhaps a bit more
apprehensive.

Lewis called the St. Bernard Sheriff's Office and deputies closed off both
sides of St. Bernard Highway from Mehle to Friscoville Avenues at about 1:30
p.m. The stretch of highway wasn't reopened until around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
