A St. Bernard Parish mother was arrested after her 14-month-old son
allegedly became unresponsive after eating the remnants of marijuana joints
that she had discarded in the backyard. The woman was booked Monday with
cruelty to a juvenile, which is a felony.

Jaranique Goins, 21, of Violet, brought her son to St. Bernard Parish
Hospital in Chalmette on Friday about 2 a.m. after he was found unresponsive
in his bed, according to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office. At the
hospital, it was determined the boy had marijuana in his system, Sheriff
Jimmy Pohlmann said.

Goins allegedly admitted she often threw her "roaches" -- the remainder of
her joints or blunts -- out the back door after she was fnished smoking. She
said her son often played in the backyard and might have eaten them,
according to Pohlmann.

Goins spent the night in jail and was released Tuesday on a $10,000 bond.
Cruelty to a juvenile is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Polhmann said child protection services have been notified of the incident.
