St. Bernard Parish lawyers qualify for vacated state judicial seat

Qualifying began Wednesday with two candidates signing up to run for former
state Judge Manuel "Manny" Fernandez's Division B seat in St. Bernard
Parish.

Kim Cooper Jones, a Republican, and Jeanne Nunez Juneau, a Democrat, each
filed their qualifying papers Wednesday morning (Aug. 14). The three days of
qualifying for the Oct. 19 election ends at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

If necessary, a runoff will be held Nov. 16.

Fernandez retired on May 31 from the state 34th Judicial District Court
after 12 years on the bench. The Louisiana Supreme Court appointed retired
Judge Robert "Bobby" Klees, a former chief judge of the 4th Circuit Court of
Appeals, who temporarily took over Fernandez's vacated seat on June 3.

Fernandez's six-year-term would have expired in December 2014 and the
election is to fill the remainder of that term.
