CHALMETTE, La. - A Chalmette man who pleaded guilty in an incident during
which he accidentally shot a man while hunting for deer was sentenced to pay
$1,000 and court costs.

The incident occurred on Jan. 4 in the wooded area near Bourmouth Park.

Joshua D. Starr, 28, pleaded guilty to negligent injury and hunting deer
during illegal hours in St. Bernard Parish Court.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries said Starr thought he had
shot a deer after hunting hours, but he and his hunting partner realized
that he had shot a person instead. The victim was hit with shot from a
12-gauge shotgun from 24 yards away, hitting the victim in the lower abdomen
and legs.

Wildlife and Fisheries said the victim was brought to University Hospital
and had surgery for his injuries, adding that he has made a "near full
recovery."
