BATON ROUGE, La. -- The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has
officially adopted an emergency rule in response to a deadly brain-eating
amoeba found in St. Bernard Parish earlier this year.

The rule increases the minimum disinfectant levels required for public water
systems and raising the required number of samples taken each month.

The decision comes after a deadly brain-eating amoeba was found in two
parish water systems earlier this year.

Water systems have until Feb. 1 to get into compliance.
