The Kiwanis Club of St. Bernard recently conducted its annual Coats for Kids
program. Chairman Susie Showalter said this year's program was a success.
The club distributed more than 628 sweatshirts to six elementary schools.

Each school evaluated the need and requested the number of sweatshirts
required. Knowing young students are going to school with some sort of
winter protective wear is rewarding and is the driving force behind her
effort to make sure the program continues every year, said Showalter, who
has been running the program for the last 15 years.

The program is funded by donations and grants to the club. For more than 25
years, the club has furnished coats to elementary children in need in St.
Bernard. What used to be coats has now changed to supplying sweatshirts with
school colors to the students.

"It became apparent that the children were only using the coats a few days
out of the year, but with the sweatshirts, the students can use them year
round," Showalter said.
