St. Bernard Parish continues to shine in education as illustrated by Joseph
Davies Elementary School's recent recognition. The Meraux school was named a
National Title I Distinguished School by the Louisiana State Department of

Davies is one of 59 schools nationwide and one of only two in Louisiana to
receive this distinction - recognized for its exceptional student
achievement. The award highlights the efforts of schools across the country
in making significant improvements for their students.

Principal Donna Schultz said her school was pleased and honored to have been

"This is really a team effort," she said. "We truly have a dedicated staff
that is committed to student excellence."

Cindy Meyer, the school's instructional coach, said Title 1 resources are a
big part of the school's academic success.

"We are all really thankful for the resources Title I provides for us. It
affords us the computer labs, the interventionists, and the small grouping
for individual instruction to improve student achievement," she said.

Tiffani Glapion, the school's Assistant Principal, credited the effort of
the faculty and staff as well as the Davies families, PTO officers and the
school's business partners.

"Without the cooperation of everyone, none of our success would be
possible," she said.

Glapion said the administration was honored to be recognized, but stressed
the importance of consistency.

"It's great to be recognized for exceptional student performances two years
in a row, but here at Davies, we want every day to be an academic success."

Title I is the largest federally funded pre-college education program in the
United States and provides funding to school districts across the country to
aid in the education of economically disadvantaged students.
