The St. Bernard Parish Sheriffs Office Tuesday (Feb. 18) said it arrested a
man suspected of robbing the Dollar General on Paris Road in Chalmette.
Matthew Hendershot, 20, of Chalmette, confessed to the Feb. 12 robbery after
investigators went to the man's home, only blocks from the scene of the
crime, the sheriffs office said.

According to officials, Hendershot entered the Dollar General and showed an
employee what appeared to be a firearm in his waistband. It was later found
to be a BB gun. Police said he then forced the employee to fill a bag with
money. Hendershot then fled on a bike, sheriffs said.

After confessing to the crime, according to the sheriff's office, Hendershot
showed investigators a spot behind an apartment building where they
recovered the bag, hooded sweatshirt, mask and BB-gun used in the crime.
Officials said they also recovered the bicycle used to flee the scene. The
cash stolen has yet to be recovered, according to police.

Hendershot is currently being held in St. Bernard Parish Prison, and is
awaiting a bond hearing set for Wednesday (Feb. 19).
