The St. Bernard Parish Library will celebrate the formal opening of its
Historic St. Bernard Courthouse Branch March 8 during a ribbon cutting
ceremony at 10 a.m. The public is invited to attend. The branch library is
at 1201 Bayou Road in lower St. Bernard.

Hours of operation are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 6 p.m.
and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.The phone number is 504-304-4788.

The new branch occupies about 450 square feet on the ground floor of the
courthouse and has a variety of books, DVDs and computers for adults as well
as children. Digital resources (eBooks and database access) can be accessed
by library patrons at the branch as well. Wi-Fi internet access is also
available.

The original St. Bernard Courthouse was built in 1915 and was in use until
1939 when the parish seat was moved to Chalmette. For the next six decades
the structure served as home to several St. Bernard Parish schools.
Hurricane Katrina closed the doors of the courthouse until just this past
fall when renovations were completed and several new occupants including the
St. Bernard Sheriff's Office, Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries and the St.
Bernard Parish Library opened for business.
