2014 St. Bernard Parish Rabies and Microchip Drive is set for Saturday, May
3rd 12:00 Noon to 4:00 pm.

The 2014 St. Bernard Parish Rabies and Microchip Drive is scheduled for
Saturday, May 3, 2014 at the St. Bernard Parish Animal Services Office
located at 5455 East Judge Perez Drive, Violet.

Dog and cat owners may have their animals vaccinated against rabies and
receive a rabies tag and parish tag for $15 per pet and microchips $15 per
pet, cash only accepted. The drive will be open from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00
p.m., no appointment necessary.

Parish and state laws require dogs and cats receive a rabies vaccination
every year to protect against the virus that attacks the central nervous
system. Around the world more than 55,000 people a year die from rabies
<http://www.worldrabiesday.org/assets/files/Global%20Burden%20Release_28%20S
ept%202011.pdf> . Rabies is caused by virus that's usually transmitted by
animal bites, most often from dogs that have been in contact with a wild
animal that was contagious. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) says more
than 90 percent of reported animal rabies cases in the U.S. are in wild
animals. The top species: raccoons, bats, skunks and foxes, so vaccinate
your dog and cat against this deadly disease and not only protect them, but
also your family.

The rabies tag is an identification tag for pets. The tag number can
identify the pet and its owner through records at the parish's Animal
Shelter. Microchips are not "GPS" but it does help with locating the owner
of an animal.

All dogs must be on a leash and all cats must be in a pet taxi or cat
carrier (no cardboard boxes). For more information or questions contact
the St. Bernard Animal Services Office at 504-278-1534.
