ST. BERNARD PARISH, La. -- The 44-year-old wife of a former St. Bernard
Parish councilman died after the truck she was in was hit from behind by
another truck and flipped over on LA 46 Sunday, according to State Police.

The crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. on LA 46 near Stay Park Road.

Brian Phillips, 45, of Pearl River, La., was driving a truck and towing a
trailer with a boat on LA 46 west, said State Police.

Phillips hit a truck driven by Fredrick Everhardt, 45, of St. Bernard
Parish. Everhardt's truck was traveling at a slower speed than Phillip's
truck. Phillips tried to avoid hitting Everhardt's truck, but ended up
hitting the right rear bumper.

Everhardt's truck went off the road, overturned and hit a tree. Paula
Everhardt, who was riding in the truck and not wearing a seat belt, was
thrown from the truck. She was taken to the hospital, where she later died,
said State Police.

Phillip's truck went off the road, jack knifed, and the truck and trailer
overturned.

According to State Police, Fredrick Everhardt and Brian Phillips were taken
to a local hospital and treated for moderate injuries.
Fredrick Everhardt served on the St. Bernard Council from 2008 to 2012.

Impairment and speed are not considered factors of the crash, according to
State Police, but toxicology test results for Phillips are pending at the
Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. The crash remains under investigation and
charges are pending.
