Gov. Bobby Jindal on Friday announced the appointment of Tyrone Ben to
replace east bank levee authority President Tim Doody for the seat
representing St. Bernard Parish. The announcement came a few hours after
Jindal signed legislation aimed at killing a wetlands damages lawsuit filed
by the authority against 97 oil, gas and energy companies.

Jindal has opposed Doody because Doody oversaw the authority in July when it
agreed to file the suit, which demanded the energy companies either repair
damage to wetlands and the environment or compensate the levee authority for
damage that couldn't be fixed.

After Ben, of Violet, was nominated for the seat in April, he said he had
not yet decided whether to support or oppose the lawsuit if he was chosen by
Jindal to take Doody's place on the authority.

Ben, who could not immediately be reached for comment, is the director of
human resources at The Guidance Center, a Chalmette outpatient behavioral
health and counseling center.

He wrote in his application to the authority that he was asked to submit his
name to the selection committee by former St. Bernard Parish President Craig
Taffaro, who now directs the state Hazard Mitigation Office and represents
Jindal's Division of Administration on the Coastal Protection and
Restoration Authority, which oversees coastal restoration and levee projects
in southern Louisiana.

Ben was the head of human resources for the parish during the Taffaro
administration. Ben said in April that Taffaro hadn't asked his position on
the levee authority's damages lawsuit when he had asked him to submit his
name to the committee.
