About 20 volunteers from the Conference on Ecological and Ecosystem
Restoration (CEER) work a swampy section of the Chalmette battlefield,
Monday, July 28, 2014, helping to restore the bottomland swamp area near the
battlefield entrance by removing Chinese Tallow seedlings, an invasive plant
species.

The theme for this project on CEER Make a Difference Event Day is "Sometimes
you just have to get dirty and fight." Most appropriate considering that the
volunteers will be grubbing plants out of the mud---and that this end of the
battlefield bore the brunt of the British attack during the Battle of New
Orleans in 1815.

The conference is a collaborative effort of the leaders of the National
Conference on Ecosystem Restoration and the Society for Ecological
Restoration and will bring together ecological and ecosystem restoration
scientists and practitioners to address challenges and share information
about restoration projects, programs, and research from across North
America.
