St. Bernard hit-and-run results in drug bust

WWL.com Reporting
What started off as a hit and run case Tuesday evening turned into a seizure
of $16,000 worth of heroin, and $9,400 in cash, pills and synthetic
marijuana found at a Chalmette home.

Sheriff's deputies say 40-year-old Michael Adams, who has already served
time in prison for drugs, and 41-year-old Britt Lavigne have been arrested
and booked with possession with intent to distribute.

St. Bernard Parish Sheriff James Pohlmann says the case began as an
investigation of a hit and run incident when a motorist fled after hitting a
light pole on St. Claude near Friscoville in Arabi.

Officers had a description of the vehicle, and began looking in area
neighborhoods. They found an SUV matching the wanted vehicle, which had
severe front end damage, on Jackson Blvd. in Chalmette.

When a small bag of what turned out to be synthetic marijuana was found in
the vehicle, narcotics agents were called to the scene and a search warrant
for the residence was obtained.

As well as nine bags of heroin totaling 161 grams and more synthetic
marijuana, the agents say they also found 26 capsules that had no markings
and which haven't been identified.

Lavigne was discovered to be wanted on a 2012 outstanding warrant for her
arrest alleging theft in Jefferson Parish.

Adams and Lavigne were being held in St. Bernard Parish Prison in lieu of
bonds set at $70,000 each, as the investigation continues.
