"Geaux Pink" is the theme of the second annual St. Bernard Breast Cancer 5K
Walk being held in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It will be
held Oct. 4 at Sidney Torres Park in Chalmette. Registration will be held
from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. The walk will begin at 9 a.m.

The registration fee is $10, and there will be $10 T-shirts available.

Trisha Arabie, Paula St. Angelo, and Paula Vosbein were instrumental in
restarting the walk in St. Bernard Parish. "This is a cause that is dear to
our hearts," St. Angelo said. "We have all lost relatives to breast cancer,
and we would love to do all that we can to support Susan G. Komen, New
Orleans Affiliate in raising funds to find a cure."

The women had decided to register for the walk a few years back, and
discovered that is wasn't on record, so they decided to take it over.

"Trisha's mom passed due to breast cancer and this prompted us to get more
involved and make sure everyone is aware of this disease and how early
detection helps. Everyone should be screened every year," Vosbein said.

The Susan G. Komen New Orleans Affiliate is the local chapter of this larger
organization. "They help with information, counseling and funds to women who
have been diagnosed with breast cancer," Vosbein said.

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure New Orleans Affiliate was founded in 1992 by
Patricia C. Denechaud and the late Dr. Merv Trail. The New Orleans Affiliate
shares the common mission of other Affiliates to eradicate breast cancer as
a life threatening disease by advancing research, education, screening and
treatment. The New Orleans Affiliate serves the Greater New Orleans Metro
area.

Susan G. Komen fought breast cancer and lost the battle in the early 1980's.
As told by her sister, throughout her diagnosis and treatment she worried
about the lack of information and education about breast cancer. Her sister,
Nancy G. Brinker, promised her sister that she would do something to help
end breast cancer. Susan G. Komen for the Cure, began in 1982 and is now the
global leader in the breast cancer movement with over $2.2 billion dollars
invested.

According to the organization, it is the largest network of breast cancer
survivors and activists. The mission of the organization is to "ensure
quality care for all and energize science to find the cures."

St. Bernard Parish's "Geaux Pink" 5K walk will help contribute to this
cause. A Parade of Prizes and refreshments for walkers and supporters will
be featured.
