FIESTA 2015 SCHEDULED FOR MARCH 7 and 8, 2015

  

          Los Isleños Heritage and Cultural Society will celebrate its 40th
annual Islenos Festival March 7th and 8th, 2015 on the grounds of Los
Isleños Museum Complex, 1345-1357 Bayou Road in St. Bernard Village. The
Isleño Historic Village, situated in the rear of Los Isleños Museum, will be
the setting for an expanded series of living history demonstrations,
featuring folk crafts, historic vernacular lifestyles and the cultural
identity of the Isleño descendant’s community in St. Bernard Parish. 

 

          Los Isleños Historic Village consists of seven structures. The
Coconut Island Barroom, Estopinal House and Kitchen, Esteves House and
Cresap-Caserta are historic structures which were re-located to the museum
complex by Los Isleños Society. Each building and the surrounding grounds
will be utilized for displays which will include farming, alligator hunting,
trapping, boat building, trawl making, basket weaving, Teneriffe lace making
and quilting. The Isleño Center will be the site of presentations
interpreting the Isleño cultural identity including folk remedies,
traditional Isleños cuisine, historic farming, genealogy and the Battle of
New Orleans. To the rear of the complex you can experience the Houma Indian
village with live demonstrations and exhibits. 

 

The Los Isleños Heritage & Cultural Society is seeking men, women, girls and
boys of Canary Island descent to participate in the Heritage Programs.
Saturday, March 7th, at 11:30 am the senior program (20+) is scheduled. The
Junior program (13-19 yrs.) and the Islenitas (5-12 yrs.) are scheduled to
take place on Sunday, March 8TH, 11:00 am.  Please contact Kathy Ziegler for
registration. Those interested in volunteering and/or having an Art and
Crafts booth are invited to contact Kathy Ziegler regarding how they may
participate and support the 2015 Fiesta.

 

  Parish President David Peralta and Isleños Society President Rhonda
Rodriguez Hannan will open Fiesta 2015 Saturday, March 7, 2014 at 11 am.
Saturday’s entertainment will include Senior Heritage program, Chalmette
Jazz Ensemble, Paso Fino Horse Exhibition, La Zarzalera (Canary Islands
folkloric group), August Rush and Pick 6 Band.  The Islenitos and Junior
Heritage programs, Ovi-g & the Froggies, La Zarzalera (Canary Islands
folkloric group) and The Topcats will perform Sunday afternoon, March 8th.
