St. Bernard Parish Officials Celebrate the Ribbon Cutting of the New Water
Treatment Plant

St. Bernard Parish officials officially dedicated the New Water Treatment
Plant located on Palmisano Boulevard in Chalmette. The facility, which cost
nearly 32 Million Dollars, was funded by a Community Development Block Grant
and LA FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant.

On hand for the ribbon cutting were Parish President David
Peralta, Councilman Ray Lauga, Office of Community Development (OCD)
Executive Director Pat Forbes, Representatives from St. Bernard Chamber and
representatives from Burk Kleinpeter, Inc., Project Engineers

Parish President David Peralta thanked OCD and FEMA for their partnership
and funding on this important project.

With the completion of the construction of the new Water Treatment Plant,
St. Bernard Parish now has a firm capacity of 12 million gallons per day
(mgd). The plant currently operates at 7 to 8 million gallons per day (mgd)
and will have the ability to handle additional demands required by
population growth in the parish. The plant was constructed so that all
vital systems and equipment are above the base flood elevation, which will
allow for minimal down time due to potential hurricane damage. The buildings
and facilities are designed to withstand 130 mph winds. The control
building and chemical buildings are made of solid concrete and concrete
filled block with precast concrete roof panels. The plant is manned 24
hours a day with 5 operators.
