Musician Benito Cabrera to perform in the Cultural Arts Building of Chalmette High School Saturday, June 6th, 2015 at 7:00 pm

Benito Cabrera, a renowned dimple musician will perform in concert on Saturday, June 6th at 7:00 p.m. in Chalmette High School’s Cultural Arts Building, located at 2600 Palmisano Boulevard, Chalmette. Cabrera last visited and performed in St. Bernard and the metropolitan New Orleans area in 2007. Cabrera will be accompanied by a guitarist. The signature musical instrument of Canarian folk music is the timple, best described as a five-stringed small guitar. Its history is traceable to the 15th century. The sound of the timple is very melodic and is an inextricable part of the traditional song and dance music of the Canaries.

Born in Lanzarote, Cabrera has emerged as virtually the preeminent musical scholar in the archipelago. He currently serves as musical director of the famous vocal group Los Sabandenos based in Tenerife. Cabrera composed the regional anthem of the Canary Islands and has performed music and directed Los Sabandenos throughout major cities and towns in the Americas, Africa, Europe and Asia. The concert is free and opened to the public. The program is sponsored by the Autonomous Government of the Canary Islands and Los Isleños Heritage and Cultural Society.
