Dave,

Grinling Gibbons carved his deep relief panels in layers, sometimes 2, sometimes
3 layers to get the depth and contrast that he was looking for.  If you consider
his carvings relief carvings, and I can't think of anything else to call them,
then yes, attaching carvings to the back panel would seem to be fair game!
