[Woodcarver] What is relief carving?

I don't think it is technically relief carving, more of some sort of layering 
technique.  IMHO I think the "relief" part refers to the relieving of the 
wood, which I interpret as wasting away the unwanted wood till what is wanted 
remains.            Just as in intarsia, there are people who use one wood 
throughout and simply stain it different shades.  Technically that is 
segmentationalism, not intarsia, which uses different species of woods to obtain different 
shades.  But people call things whatever they choose to.  I will leave it to 
better artists than myself to classify it                     Maura
