Hi my answers to the questions are:
   1. Bill Wolfe was my first instructor and I realised how much I didn't
know and had to unlearn! :) when I took a week long class in Cadillac Mich.
Then I found a club in Evart and got more help!
   2. I was self taught for a year or so (some books were used).

   3. And last I started in mid life about age 40.

And to add to this question how many of you design your own or do you use
patterns from others?

I still use lots of others patterns - I wish I could design my own (and yet
sometimes I do change them around a bit maybe that counts as designing my
own???)
