If you are looking for something to hold logs,  check out Lois 
Henry's carving buck -
go to http://carverscompanion.com and once there click on

Resource Files,   then click on
New Carver Files,  then click on
In The Shop,   then scroll down to
Workholders,    then click on link for
The Carving Buck

When you get to Lois' site,  scroll down until you find the large 
carving work holder.
