Hi Clive,
The dangers of carving spalted wood are the same as turning spalted wood.
Those microscopic fungus spoors become airborn during carving as well as
turning. Your lungs become a great growing place for fungus because your
lungs are warm, dark and damp. Wear breathing protection when working with
any spalted wood. Also fallen trees such as those with mushrooms growing
from its cracks might make good carving wood but it is also full of spoors
so breathing protection is highly recommended.

Hi all,
Wondering about the dangers of carving spalted wood. I have collected a few
logs from the mother in laws yard and when I started carving one it was
quite badly spalted. So I put it aside to dry for a bit and then began
wondering about the dangers associated with this. I know about the dangers
of turning this kind of wood due to the dust, so it started me wondering.
Thanks and take care all.
Clive.
