Hey Big Al,

Hope you and Sweet Sue are doing well.

One way to go about doing a "burr cut" hairstyle is to use a burr ... a diamond
burr.

Carve the shape of the hair the way you want it to end up then take a very sharp
pointed diamond burr in your rotary tool and start making tiny holes in the
surface. It will take some time to do the whole surface, but it leaves a nice
effect. Do some on a practice board first to see if it gets you the results you
want.

Merry CHRISTmas to you and yours! See you at your show in March 2008.

Subject: [Woodcarver] Hair Ideas, Anyone??

Hello Everyone,

Am in the process of carving a caricature of a real live person from a photo,
for the first time. The person's hair is sort of a long, military style "buzz
cut" that perfectly conforms to his head--there are no valleys, high points, or
v-tool/veiner cuts to add texture and interest. His hair is about one quarter
inch long and simply stands up straight on top and out to the side--it is all
the same length. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to add texture or some
sort of realism to the hair? It is perfectly round and textureless at this
time--just doesn't look right. Any and all suggestions would be greatly
appreciated. Thank you!

Also, Jan, if you read this, could you please tell us your "Umber Juice" recipe
again. I seem to have lost my copy in the mess I call a workshop. Thanks!!!
