OK, Bill. Here's my question to help get the list back to carving
questions.
I'm working on some birds for a show later this month and I need to
create some habitat. I want to have a sandy shoreline to display some
decorative shorebirds. How do list members create the effect of sand
in a habitat? Thanks in advance for any and all ideas.

Hey Jack, hows about a layer of glue and some fine yellow pine sawdust.
want to carve it, I would say the smallest etching bit.
