I do clay studies for about 30% of my sculptures. When I make a clay model for a life-sized work, I make it 1/3 or 1/4 size, which makes it easy to convert. I have proportional calipers that can be adjusted to those proportions, but multiplying times three or times four is easy to do in your head. Mostly, however, once I've done the model, and made the proportional glue-up, I seldom refer back to the clay, as the process of making the clay fixes the concept in my mind. I don't slavishly follow the clay model anyway, as I like to leave a bit of "invention" for the carving process.

I use clay for smaller projects, but don't have enough to do some of the larger things I work on. I have used high density polyurethane insulation for those. It carves easy and you can break off an arm and pin it in a new position with toothpicks... Works for me!
