Merrilee,

I haven't ever done a gun stock from a blank, but there are several
sources that will sell you a stock blank either flat, just bandsawn to
rough outline, rounded and inletted for the metal action, or completely
finished. Fajen is one name I knew, but they seem to be out of that
business mostly. Look here for what your son may be asking for with the
thumb hole: http://www.gunaccessories.com/Fajen/sporter.asp

This appears to be a dyed, layered resin treated stock that is ready to
be fitted and finished, although it may not even need that. Wright's and
Cantwell are two other names I found when I googles "Gunstock + wood
blank".

Fitting a stock to the metal action is time consuming and tedious work,
requiring a lot of effort to do it accurately and not damage any parts.
I would opt for a fully fitted stock, ready to carve and checker. If
you want to carve the thumbhole, that is fine too, but otherwise be
careful how much you bite off on this work.

Best wishes, Vic H
