You should look into actual checkering tools for this job. Browse the Brownell catalog. Consider the density of your piece of walnut. If the grain is loose, it won't take kindly to fine-line checkering (20+ lines per inch). The checkering tools are not expensive - a handle and a few heads are all you need. Be extra careful around tight turns. If you have Kennedy's book, there is no better reference on the subject. Have some scrap pieces on hand so you can practise, practise, practise first. Go to some fine gun shops and look at the various custom works for details - you might run across a gunsmith that will gladly explain how he/she does it. Good luck - can't wait for the pictures.
