Kathy,

I too am a beginning carver but I've lurked here quite a while so.....

Let the group know your approximate location (city/state) and see if anyone
comes

up with a carving club in your vicinity. Failing that there are a number of
carving

related magazines which typically have plans and instructions included
ranging from

simple to OH MY, <G>. I'm sure others will chime in with several other web
sites but

a good start is:

http://www.thecarverscorner.com

http://www.whillock.com

http://www.thecarvingshop.net <http://www.thecarvingshop.net/>

http://www.carvingmagazine.com

http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com
<http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/pdfdownloads/2082ChristmasGnome.pdf>

And Big Dog will sell you anything you need at:
http://www.thewoodcraftshop.com

PS: if you're going to hand hold the item get a carving glove.... Less blood
on the carving that way <G>

I am wondering if someone can point me in the right direction, I am new to
this and the only thing I have carved or anything of that sort is a cane for
me. I watched my grandpa, when I was little, carve out smoking pipes for he
and my grandma would carve and whittle. I want to do this but I have no idea
where to start and since both of my grandparents are deceased I can not ask
their advice on how to start, where to get the wood, and other tools, or
patterns, or directions, I am coming into this totally blind about where to
start and what to do, can anyone out there help me?

Thank you

Kathy
