[Woodcarver] Woodburning smoke abatement

This is finally something I can contribute to instead of hiding in the
shadows and learning from everyone else.

Dick,

So far you've gotten a couple good ideas. The small fan pointed away
will work so long as you get the draft going where you want it. Another
option would be an electric ashtray. They are meant to deal with smoke and
maybe even filter a little. If you get too much of a draft, your tip will
be cooled and you will frustrate yourself because you won't get the burn you
want.

Something else that will help is if you raise the piece you're working
on to a 10-15 degree angle. This helps you see better the lines or where
you're burning and it allows the smoke to rise away from your face. I built
a small wedge (lap desk size) just for this purpose from scraps. You will
have to move your piece around to keep the slant but you'll figure that out
quickly enough.

If you do have to burn and there is no way to keep the smoke out of
you face, a nice gentle blowing as you exhale will move the smoke enough so
you don't get a face full.

Keep working, woodburning can be very fun once you get over the
hurdles at the beginning. Before you know it you'll be another pyrographic
artist.

Just started (actually tried) some woodburning. My meager efforts indicate
that I need many, many hours of practice and that I will have

many many questions to pose.

My first question is, "What do you do with the smoke?" Now remember I just
started... I don't want someone to tell me that I need the 'XXQ

Ultra Smoke Remover' for $1000 ( with $25 filters that last 20 minutes)

And I live in New England so I don't want to take my nice warm room-air and
blow it out the nearest window.

Answers anyone (???) or should I forget about woodcarving/woodburning an
take up a hobby of "sniggling". (Anyone know what that is??)

Thanks in advance... cough ...cough... cough...
