[Woodcarver] A Carving Vice

Huck,

Not a vise recommendation, but if you're carving wood spirits from
cottonwood bark, this is a tip that will work for most any vise or clamping
system you come up with.

Clamp jaws applied directly to the piece of cottonwood bark usually mar the
bark, break of large chunks, or at least get in the way. I apply 4 squirts
of hot glue at the four corners of a 5" scrap chunk of 2x3 and attach it to
the back of my cottonwood bark. I then clamp to that rather than the bark
itself. After the project is complete I can normally pop it off by driving
a carpenter's straight chisel between the 2x3 and the backside of the
cottonwood. This last step might take a layer or two of the cottonwood with
it, but being on the backside, that shouldn't matter. Make the scrap chunk
larger or smaller according to the size of bark you're using.

Keep on Carvin'

Subject: [Woodcarver] A Carving Vice

Hello Gang:

I am a woodworker but new at carving. I tried my hand at wood spirits and
for now that's what I will do. I need a basic vice to attach to my bench.
There is a lot of different vices out there. I don't need to spend a lot of
money on something fancy . . . just a basic vice. Can you give me some
direction? Thank you.

Huck
