[Woodcarver] Help on building a 14 foot tall cross

I'm working on a project of making a 12-14 foot tall cross and the beams need to be no less than 8 inches by 8 inches. This is for our Easter program and it will be suspended from the center of the sanctuary so weight becomes an issue.

I was thinking of making hollow beams from 1/4" plywood.
I was also thinking of using some kind of foam, but I don't think the foam could support its own weight.

If anyone has any ideas please let me know.
