Hi John,
I'm guessing, from the plywood shipping crates I make for my mantels, that a
plywood cross that size would weigh about 100 lbs by the time you got the
frame and plywood put together. The plywood might be a good choice.
Another idea is to use 8-inch plastic sewer pipe. The wall thickness is
thick enough to carve bark-like texture. You could use epoxy to build out
knots and limbs, etc. An Arbortech Pro would work good for carving the
texture. If you carved too deep the hole could be filled with epoxy. I think
you could carve enough off to bring the weight down to about 100 lbs.
