Hello Haroun,
So-o-o happy for you and Johanna. Congratulations!!!
A bit of advice for a long and happy marriage:
1. Pick up your wood chips before going to bed so your spouse won't
get splinters in her feet making the nightly bathroom trek.
2. Carve something nice for her or the house for no special
occasion ...it's a just-because-you're-special day.
3. Try to keep the wood chips out of the food & the bed.
Johanna must be one fine lady to become Mrs. Hadadi. Good for you
(and her).
Love to you both,
Sally and David

how about furring strips and chicken wire covered with paper mache. This
would allow it to remain fairly light so it could easily be raised and hung
without much worry.

trying to sharpen my larger flexcut v-tools...can get the sides sharp but
not the point...noticed that some of the larger v's have a flat at the
underside of the v and the smaller ones don't...although I am sure this
topic has been discussed before I don't remember it or any links to
info...also can't remember what I did before (is this a sign of age?)...what
do I do to get the cutting point sharp?
Thanks.

Hi Phylis,
Sharpen the V at the bottom like a small gouge following the same curve as
the radius in the inside. The straight wings are sharpened like straight
chisels blended into the small gouge on the bottom.

trying to sharpen my larger flexcut v-tools...can get the sides sharp but
not the point...noticed that some of the larger v's have a flat at the
underside of the v and the smaller ones don't...although I am sure this
topic has been discussed before I don't remember it or any links to
info...also can't remember what I did before (is this a sign of age?)...what
do I do to get the cutting point sharp?
Thanks.

Gentle Subscribers:
The PDF document on V-tool sharpening by Chris Pye is about the most
comprehensive I've ever seen.
He does what I do when sharpening... BUT Chris found a way - and spent
the time - to put the techniques into a readable an comprehensive
tutorial. Very well done. My hat is off to you, Chris!!!
Blessings and Peace,

Hi Harry and Johanna.
Today is the big day. Congratulations. I hope it is beautiful where you
are!!! One of the secrets of marriage is to both have your own interests
so as
not to get on each others nerves too often. So carve on Harry but also
remember to shower your bride with lots of love and affection. Give her
the best
thing you can give, lots of your time. All my best for you both.

Yes, I got this email too. I can't figure out why someone would spam this
kind of message. Maybe they're looking for someone to give them bank account
info so they can send them the initial $100,000 downpayment to start carving
the elephant? Maybe they pay in peanuts?
Gotta say this is the wierdest spam I've gotten. The dimensions are so
strange too. Why not just 8 feet, but rather 8 feet 3 inches, like the extra
3 inches is that important.
I've got a tiny carved elephant from Thailand. Maybe if I put it in water
it will expand to 8 ft. 3 inches? Hey! This email could be my ticket to
carving nirvana! I better reply right away!!!

This offer may or not be real. I'd be careful, however.
Some time ago, I received an inquiry about an elephant sculpture similar to
a commission I had once done, which was pictured on my website. I never do
work without a contract and a down payment so I asked the inquirer to give
me his address so I could mail him a contract. He didn't reply. Weeks
later I got another email saying that he had been ill and would like to go
ahead with the commission, asking where he could send the cashier's check.
I held firm that I wouldn't proceed without a shipping address, and a signed
contract. No reply. After another few weeks, he emailed again, that his
client was in a rush for the elephant, indicating he was ready to send me a
check immediately. Since the lack of a specific address had been obvious
from the beginning, the deal smelled fishy from the start, so I didn't
respond to his final email. A week later I got a cashier's check in the
mail for $37,985, or some such odd figure, slightly less than the $40,000
ballpark figure I had
given him. It was a check from a bank in Nigeria, with no note or return
address. Shortly after that, I got another email asking if I had gotten his
check. By then it I had not doubt that the deal was a sham, so I took the
check to the post office to report mail fraud, and then to the police.
They told of many people getting caught in schemes of every description
where they are sent a phony check and then are asked, in one scheme or
another, to return part of it, which, of course, would be the victim's real
money. Then, only after the processing delays, the very real looking check
turns out to be phony, too late for the victim to stop payment on the real
check.
An amazing number of people are taken by these schemes, including, the post
office officials told me, lawyers and others whom one would think would be
most wary.
Don't be baited. Take control of the situation, set your own guidelines,
get mailing and delivery addresses, insist on a signed contract. Do
business in person or by mail, rather than online, unless you have a PayPal
system, etc. where you know the transaction will involve real funds, rather
than a phony check. Never accept an "over-payment" that puts you into
returning good money for bad.

Any decent prospective customer wanting to engage a carver in a
project - even a small one - will discuss the project directly with
the carver. Furthermore, a good customer will want to engage the
carver at a trust level... trustworthiness being demonstrated by BOTH
parties.

Now you can get a Carvewright machine---have it scan an elephant and then
carve it. Just borrow the one from the zoo to make the copy from which to
work
