Joe,

I have several knives I can donate to the Veteran Carving Thingy. I will
get them in the mail tomorrow or early next week...

Hi Joe

In the most recent Wood Carver's Supply catalog they are advertising a
new series of gouges, under the name "Mastercarver", made in China but
supposedly pretty good, that run $19.95 each for all sizes and sweeps...They
could be just the thing for building student sets.

God Bless,

Stephan

Hi Stephan and fellow carvers,

Thanks for the info but $20 is to much for our budget. We're thinking that
we might be able to get a few good used tools in the $7 range.

Thanks to you all. I am truly amazed with the generosity of our carving
community. John has offered to send money, Byron has offered three mallets
and Mike is sending me a Murphy knife. Thanks you all for your awesome
gifts. I will pass your names on to our Marines.

This whole class concept began when my student Norm Brady asking me to teach
a carving class to disabled vets at Camp Pendleton because they had a need
for a carved sign. It was Norm's vision and his connections that gave me
this awesome opportunity. There's nothing like getting more people hooked on
carving. I plan to spend some 3 days teaching them the basics. We now have 3
students and think it will end up being 5.

The 3-day class will begin with the tools and sharpening, then the relief
donut exercise, then a free-form chip carving done with the V-tool, then a
decorative 5 X 7 picture frame and finishing up with a small relief of the
Marine emblem. Hopefully they will have fun and be able to get the sign done
with Norm Brady's help after the class is over.

Norm and I are trying to split the expense. He has a condo near by, saving
on hotel expense. They have a woodshop on base that will help get some of
the stuff we need. I'm really looking forward to spending time with our
heroes. Just think how woodcarving has improved the quality of our lives. If
this can help even one it would be awesome. I know, as usual from teaching
any class, that I will gain much more from this experience then my students.

Thank you,

Joe Dillett
