Hey Mike -
Thanks - but you're gonna make my head swell - exceeding the teacher indeed. <G> Also - did your blank supplier refer to this as river cane? From what I've read - it seems more like true bamboo to me. River cane is usually smaller in diameter and thinner walled (again - from what I've read). Curious to hear what your friend who supplied it says.
As for what I did to improve volume . . . the only change I made was to flatten the block and cut the flue in the actual bamboo instead. From what I've read - the cutting edge of the TSH (true sound hole) should ideally be in the middle of the stream of air (when viewed side on). So by moving the flue to the body of the flute (as opposed to in the block) it lowers the airstream thus effectively raising the cutting edge. Apparently this greatly increases volume. The other change I made in the flue was to widen it to match the width of the TSH. When I cut it in the block I had it slightly narrower. I still have to apply a finish (inside and out) and that will likely improve volume even further.
I can't wait to try the mahogany blanks you cut for me. But I've been tied up curing more bamboo and getting ready to try making more from my own bamboo source.
Cheers!
Chuck
