Munsey Willard Webb, 79






Munsey Willard Webb, age 79, of Galax, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006 after an extended illness. Born in the Allisonia community of Pulaski County on Feb. 16, 1927, he was the son of the late Bessie Montgomery Webb and Kennard McKinley Webb.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Hazel Farmer Webb, and a daughter, Margo Webb Moretz and her husband, Gene Allen Moretz of Bristol; a sister, Mildred P. Webb of Wytheville; a sister-in-law, Maxine Taylor Webb of Beckley, W.Va.; a niece, Nancy Webb Payne; and a nephew, Rodney Webb.

Munsey attended Allisonia Elementary School, Draper High School and East Tennessee State College. He was a World War II veteran of the 6th US Army Calvary 6th constabulary, 28th ordnance, serving in Germany as company bugler. Following the war he was employed by the Norfolk and Western Railroad as a depot agent and telegraph operator in the Radford Division, spending most of his time at the Galax Station. After his retirement from the railroad and the discontinuation of train services to Galax, he purchased the railroad property which be operated as furniture warehouse in the old Galax Depot.

Munsey was a member of the Galax First United Methodist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the New River Historical Society, the old Galax Country Club and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He will be remembered for his publication of the "Norfolk and Western Railway Company North Carolina Branch," his collection of railroad pictures and his willingness to share information and his positive thinking.

A funeral service was held Monday, Nov. 13 at 11 a.m. in Vaughan-Guynn Chapel the Rev. Walt Simmerman officiating. Burial followed at the Bethany United Methodist Church cemetery in Wythe County. Military rites were performed by Hillsville VFW Post 1115.
