Jim,

I do recall those Burma-Shave signs!

The store is still in business as I saw an article on-line about it in the Columbus Dispatch.

If I remember, it was open "seasonally."

Often we would head to Lake Erie (Marblehead Peninsula-where we kept our boat) from our home in Flint during weekends and pretty much follow the N&W all the way to Bellevue or Sandusky, depending on which route we took. Most trips we saw at least a train or two and paced some at times.

After driving over the N&W at Marion (we could see the old coaling tower in the distance) we took Route 4 up through Bucyrus, etc... Then, would often cut over to Route 269 and went right into Bellevue. I recall crossing over The N&W Col-Sandusky line and then the line coming in from Toledo....almost always seeing a train on either track. Then, crossing Sandusky Bay we could see the Penn Central bridge and train traffic at times. I also seem to recall tracks that served a large quarry near Lakeside which I believe was the Lakeside & Marblehead Railway? Not sure though, it that line still ran in the late 1960's.

Yes, I do! It is (was?) along US23 just north of Troyton. I liked the Burma-Shave style signs they had. You can view the N&W tracks across the field out front. Back when the intermediate signals were position lights, you could still tell the indication even though it was located quite a distance away. Of course now the PLs at Troyton are gone too.
